Where will you live in the future?
According to the author of the book “Walking Home,” the price of gasoline may well dictate that decision.
“The game-changer is going to be the point when gasoline goes from being $1.40 a litre to $2, 2.50, $3 a litre,” Ken Greenberg tells 660News. “At that point, alot of people are going to have second thoughts. They’ll be looking for other kinds of alternatives.”
Greenberg says home builders are getting the message.
“I’m looking out the window of the hotel where I’m staying and I’m surrounded by new condominium buildings that are going up in an area where it used to be all parking lots,” he adds. “In Toronto, where i live, there are 25,000 new residential units under construction in the downtown right now. That’s a pretty significant statistic that suggests that change is on the way.”
Greenberg says Calgary is making great strides in developing its downtown area, making it a more attractive place to live. He predicts in the not too distant future people will be walking more, not only to get to work, but to get their groceries and health care.
