The government is looking into steps to better protect new home buyers and hold builders more accountable.
The proposal would include an increase to the length of time that charges may be laid for building code offences to up to three years after homeowners take possession.
It also proposes the maximum fine be increased to $100,000 for the first offence and $500,000 for subsequent offences.
Other items included would be creating a regulatory framework for mandatory new home warranties and a review of the Safety Codes Act.
Minister of Municipal Affairs Hector Goudreau says the approach strikes the balance between consumer protection and industry responsibility.
He says consumers need to know they will be protected when making such a large purchase.
