Bylaw boss says complaints aren’t garbage

It’s another sign of the arrival of better weather.

Complaints about early morning garbage collection are on the rise again.

Bylaw boss Bill Bruce tells 660News, even though waste management companies are told to keep their vehicles parked between 10p.m. and 7a.m. weekdays, trucks are making their rounds in the wee hours of the morning.

“For many people if they get awakened in the night like that,” says Bruce, “they don’t get back to sleep and then they have a tough day the next day.  That’s why the law is there, and it only applies, as I say, within in those tight boundaries of the downtown and residential housing.”

Bruce says if somebody’s sleep is ruined by such a noise they should register a formal complaint.

“The best thing is to call 3-1-1,” adds Bruce. “If you can identify the company that helps us.  I don’t expect you to run out in your pajamas, but if you at least tell me the name of the company, we’ll at least contact them and have a discussion. Then we generally put officers out at 4am to see if we can catch them in the act and then we’ll pursue charges.”

Bruce says bylaw officers issue fines of $200 to drivers who don’t obey the noise bylaw and those fines are boosted for repeat offenders.
