ARTICS group calls for CBE budget transparency

One group is at the ready ahead of Tuesday’s public school board meeting with questions about the preliminary operating budget released by the Calgary Board of Education.
The CBE announced plans to cut 331 jobs next school year in an effort to manage a $61.7 million budget shortfall.
The Association for Responsive Trusteeship in Calgary Schools (ARTICS) wonders how, with all the job cuts, the CBE can still afford to increase administration’s share of next year’s budget.
ARTICS Chair Larry Leach tells 660News parents want to know why administration and the Board of Trustees will get another $3.6 million, or a nine per cent increase, while Calgary will have at least 170 fewer teachers next school year.
Leach says he’s looking forward to getting some answers about how students will be impacted by this budget.
He adds he also wants to know how the CBE calculates the projected budget shortfalls of $33 million and $85 million in the next two years.
