Provincial PC Leadership campaign heats up

The campaign to replace Alberta’s retiring Premier is heating up.

Former Finance Minister Ted Morton has issued a video on his website saying he’s the guy to fight any necessary battles with the federal government in Ottawa.

“Ottawa bureaucrats are already threatening to take control of oilsands development, resources that belong to Albertans,” says Morton.  “To control our economic future, we must control our environmental future.  And that means not letting Ottawa take control of our energy.”

“Remember, no matter who’s in power in Ottawa, Alberta’s interests are always at risk,” Morton continues in the video. “Whether it’s the one size fits all approach to federalism, equalization taking billions of dollars a year from you, or threats to our jurisdiction over our own resources, Alberta needs a strong voice at the table with Ottawa.”

Morton is one of six candidates vying for the Premier’s job, with Premier Ed Stelmach previously declaring he will step down in September.

Members of the provincial Progressive Conservatives will elect a new leader on September 17th.  If a second ballot is needed, it will be held October 1st.
