Taxis are now allowed to park alongside fire hydrants in downtown Calgary.
The move by the city is an effort to deal with a parking shortage in the core, as cabbies will no longer have to rove around looking for a spot at a taxi stand.
The program is also designed to free-up more parking spots for other drivers.
If the test doesn’t prove problematic for the fire department, the city will likely phase out many taxi stands, and replace them with more park plus spots along the curbside.
