Taxing times at city hall

Calgary’s mayor and aldermen will set tax rates for the next three-year budget cycle Tuesday.

The chair of the Finance Committee, Alderman Gord Lowe, says everything is on the table.

Lowe tells 660News, thanks to input from some 23,000 Calgarians earlier this year, council has a very good idea on what areas need to be boosted and which ones should be trimmed.

He says while they will tell administration what numbers to use to prepare upcoming budgets, final decisions won’t be made until the fall.

Lowe won’t divulge what increases are planned, but rumours are circulating taxes will rise anywhere from 15 to 22 per cent between 2012 and 2014.

Adding to complexity of the budget debate is the city needs to find cash to pay for upgrades to water treatment plants while managing an increasing debt load.
