Hike in power rates

Non-contract Enmax customers can expect to be hit with a massive hike in their power rates.

Ian Todd with Enmax tells the Calgary Sun the 38 per cent increase on top of other recent hikes in the rates are spiking because of old coal plants closing.

Todd says all of Enmax’s facilities are running at near maximum because the old plants are shutting down.

Regulated rates are going up this month from 7.15 cents to 9.89 cents per kilowatt hour.

The Industrial Power Consumers Association of Alberta predicts prices will go up again next month but expects the problems should be alleviated eventually with new plants coming online.
