Pedestrian killed on Highway 1

A pedestrian has been killed on Highway 1 after wandering onto the roadway near Valley Ridge Boulevard in the city’s northwest.
Police say the 42-year-old Morley man was hit by a car around 11:55 p.m. Friday.
Authorities were forced to close all westbound lanes of the major auto route for four and a half hours while they investigated.
It was pitch black when the man stepped into oncoming traffic.
Duty Inspector Paul Stacey says one vehicle saw him and swerved out of the way at the last second.
“But another one, right after, collided with the pedestrian and unfortunately the pedestrian was killed instantly,” he says.
He says the man walked right into oncoming traffic.
“From the witnesses that we have, including the person that swerved out of the way initially, was the pedestrian actually stumbled right out onto the roadway, right into the travel lanes, so the fellow wasn’t even walking in the safe-zone of the road on the shoulder at that point,” he says. “He was right smack dab in the travel lanes.”
Police say speed was not a factor in the incident and they believe the pedestrian was drunk.
There were four occupants in the 2004 Volkswagen Golf including two children.
None of the four were injured.
It’s not clear why the man walked into the road.
