Cyber-criminals target social networks

From tweeting to updating our status on Facebook, Canadians have a love affair with social media.

However, a new finding from internet security firm Symantec finds cyber-criminals are honing in on that new interest.

The analysis found the top social media site targeted by spammers was Facebook, followed by Twitter, with YouTube in third spot.

Symantec’s Mark Fossey says spammers will send a message to your email that looks like one you might receive from your Facebook account.

“They tend to all have a subject that implies you some sort of message or notification,” says Fossey.

Spammers are hoping you open up that message and then click on a link which, instead of taking you to your Facebook login for example, takes you somewhere else, opening up your computer to cyber crime.
