Report: Labour shortage in construction industry coming

A new report predicts a shortage of skilled workers in Alberta could stifle economic growth in the next few years.

The Construction Owners Association of Alberta says about 320,000 construction workers are needed country-wide between now and 2019 to keep up with growing demand.

According to the report, only about half of those jobs can be filled by Canadians, with the rest being filled by temporary foreign workers.

The worker gap in Alberta will be an estimated 40,000.

The report suggests promoting the construction industry and bringing more women into the field could help ease the labour shortage.
