LONDON – This is the last Sunday that people in Britain will be reading, “News of the World”. The front page of the final edition of the paper carries the message, “Thank you & Goodbye.”
In the final edition, they also apologized to their readers for letting them down. Five million copies were printed for Sunday’s edition, twice the usual circulation.
The muckraking paper also apologized for hacking into phones, including that of a missing 13-year-old girl who was found dead.
There were cheers and applause as the staff of News of the World left the paper company.
Leaving his office, editor Colin Myler saluted what he called a wonderful team of people and thanked the staff for all of their hard work.
“It is actually 8,674th edition after 168 proud years.”
“I want to pay tribute to this wonderful team of people. After a really difficult day, I’ve produced, in a brilliant and professional way, a wonderful newspaper,” said Myler
The paper said that the profits for the final edition will go to charity.
The paper’s roughly 200 staff members are now out of jobs, but have been told they can apply elsewhere within its parent company, News International.
