Downtown library site selected

City Council will vote Monday in favour of the East Village as the site for the new downtown library location.
That’s according to the Calgary Herald which says various sources have confirmed the choice, which is the first on a list of five possible locations in a report prepared by consultants on the long-standing issue.
The new library, replacing the downtown main branch which was built to serve the city when it was half its current size, would be one of the centre pieces of a rejuvenated East Village and a short distance from the $132 million National Music Centre.
The city has already committed $175 million to the project, and Culture Minister Lindsay Blackett says the province might consider tag teaming on another cultural facility, such as an art gallery.
The new library would be part of a major upgrade in an infamous area of the downtown known as crack cul de sac. It would encompass the area from the 8th Avenue LRT tunnel to 3rd Street.
