This article is more than 5 years old.
In the 20s and 30s, the only way to travel through Alberta was by train.
And you can still ride high on the rails; passing open fields, aspen groves and farmlands on the Alberta prairie railway in Stettler.
A steam engine is a great way to see rural Alberta.
Take a drive north on Highway 2 then east towards Stettler to start the train ride.
Once on the locomotive, which heads south to Big Valley and then back, you’ll catch glimpses of geese, ducks, and even hawks circling overhead.
When you stop in Big Valley, satisfy your sweet tooth with a square of homemade fudge from Granny’s Fudge Factory.
The whole ride is about six hours round-trip.
When you arrive back in Stettler, take a trip through the Town and Country Museum or a walking tour of dozens of historic downtown buildings.
