Calgary Reaches Out coalition hosts a Slave Lake fundraiser

Albertans are helping Albertans.

The Calgary Reaches Out coalition hosted a fundraiser in Calgary’s Chinatown to help residents in Slave Lake rebuild their lives.

Members of the community, including Calgary-Fort MLA Wayne Cao, hosted a fundraiser Saturday night at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.

Cao tells the Herald, “we get together to help people in distress, and now we have a chance to help those in our own backyard”.

250 people attended the event, which included a traditional, 10-course banquet, silent auction and performances.

It followed a day of celebration, at the Chinatown Street Festival.

More than 400 homes and buildings were destroyed by wildfire in May.

The Calgary Reaches Out coalition includes many caring individuals, cultural associations and the Canada Red Cross.
