A YMCA kids’ group will be going door-to-door in several areas of Calgary this week for their 12th annual food drive for the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank.
They’ll be leaving pamphlets and bags requesting donations that they will pick up the next day.
Heather Godfrey with the YMCA Kids in Motion program tells 660News it’s a great learning experience for the kids.
“The benefit for the children is learning the importance of helping others and that every little bit helps and makes a difference in people’s lives. They really look at all the food that gets collected, they look at it and go ‘Wow, if we hadn’t done this, these people wouldn’t be able to eat,'” says Godfrey.
In exchange for volunteering, the kids who are from low-income families will be able to visit places like the Calgary Zoo, Heritage Park and the Science Centre.
Donations can be dropped off at any YMCA location until the end of next week.
