Farm organizations break down food dollar expenditures

A number of agriculture groups across the west are banding together to launch a consumer awareness campaign.

Despite high food prices, growers are not padding their bank accounts.

The President of Keystone Agricultural Producers in Manitoba tells 660News farmers only get about a five per cent return from every food dollar expenditure on their grain and cereal products.

That compares to 28 per cent for fruit and vegetable producers, 41 per cent for beef producers and 55 per cent for dairy farmers.

Doug Chorney says the numbers show producers deserve a greater share of each dollar consumers spend on groceries.

The Alberta portion of the “farmers share” campaign will be launched early next month.
