Residents in Ottawa react to Military name change

OTTAWA – The new, old name brings decades of history with it.

1310News went downtown to find out how people in Ottawa feel about the revival of the royal titles.

“I think it’s a great thing,” said Jocelyne. Her friend Janet-Louise agreed.

“I’m very proud of being able to add the name ‘Royal’ with anything that has to do with Canada,” she said.

Eleanor Campbell was married to a man who served in what was then known as the Royal Canadian Air Force and she said it is about time the name came back.

“It’s history, you know, it’s a historical background and that’s what it was all about when those young men went to war,” she said.

“That would probably be pretty awesome,” agreed Waylon. “It would probably add, like, a sense of dignity to the people.”

Some people have said that while the change doesn’t really affect them, they like the ring it has to it.

“I think it sounds better,” said Thomas, adding that given the success of the Royal Visit in July, Canadians will likely be warm to the idea.

The official titles of the Canadian military will be the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Army, as opposed to the names they were given under the umbrella title of the Canadian Forces.
