Thousands of people turned out Monday night for candlelight vigils across Canada to honour NDP leader Jack Layton, who lost his battle with cancer Monday morning.
Vigils were held in a number of cities including Ottawa, Montreal and Vancouver to remember the politician simply known as Jack.
Flowers and notes are piling up outside Jack Layton’s Toronto home and constituency office and by the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill.
Albertans will have a chance to pay their respects at a vigil in Edmonton on Wednesday night.
Liberal Leader Bob Rae responded to Layton’s passing by saying “Sometimes the world has a way of breaking your heart.”
Thousands of ordinary Canadians are even paying tribute to Layton on social networks, including Facebook and Twitter.
Most messages on Twitter appear to be from people expressing their condolences or sending links to online news stories.
