Joint Alberta policing plan hits a snag

A plan announced last year to have Alberta Sheriffs and RCMP do joint traffic patrols in the province is taking a lot longer than first thought to fully implement.
According to The Calgary Herald, in many cases the sheriffs in large centres like Calgary have to drive long hours to meet their RCMP counterparts, which cuts back on enforcement time.
While sheriffs can hand out traffic tickets, they have to call in the RCMP for criminal matters like impaired driving.
The provincial plan calls for the eventual establishment of 20 integrated traffic units throughout the province, but the solicitor general’s department said Mounties and sheriffs are under the same roof at only six locations so far.
The idea for joint traffic patrols was announced in 2010.
