Privacy Commissioner inundated with breach notifications

Alberta’s Privacy Commissioner says the recent number of breach notifications coming into his office is startling.

Frank Work says it’s a significant number over a short period of time, and his staff have been stretched to the limit dealing with them.

The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has received more than 90 breach notification reports in the past 16 months.

Work says it’s encouraging however, to know that organizations realize the importance of protecting personal information against risks such as identity theft.

Breach notification became mandatory under the Personal Information Protection Act in May of 2010.

The majority of breaches reported involve human error involving email, fax or regular mail.
