Daytripper: A ghostly adventure

With over 50 ghost towns around Alberta, it’s hard to find the best one.
The town of Rowley is a half-hour drive north of Drumheller on Highway 56 and boasts 12 permanent residents.
But before you travel to this ghostly town, stop in for a drink at the Last Chance Saloon in Wayne.
Wayne is off the main highway 6 km east of Drumheller and then drive 4 km in a winding moon-like valley, crossing 11 one-lane bridges, each with a wooden plank bed. Along the way, stop and take pictures of abandoned homes and machinery left in this ghost town.
Visit the Rosedeer Hotel and Last Chance Saloon, where the walls are covered with black and white photos of Wayne and the old coal mines.
Another ghost town to check out is East Coulee, with plenty of old buildings, abandoned mines, hoodoos, fossils, and unusual scenery to keep the ghost town occupied for quite some time.
Just east of the town site is the historic Atlas Coal Mine, which gives a marvelous glimpse of the Drumheller Valley’s glorious past.
The last stop is in Rowley, where the hit Canadian movie “Bye Bye Blues” was filmed in 1988.
