Social worker says children in danger

A social worker with Alberta’s Child and Youth Services ministry tells the Calgary Herald, a quota system is endangering the lives of children at risk.

The Herald quotes an unnamed source who claims she’s been criticized by her bosses for taking too many children out of homes where she felt they were in danger.

The source goes on to tell the Herald’s Licia Corbella, when she asked her boss if there was a quota system behind how many children could be seized, she was told that in essence, there was.

That’s being denied by a ministry spokesman.

A damning report this week slammed the way case workers handled the care of 14-month-old Elizabeth Velasquez who died last year while in the care of her mother and her mother’s boyfriend.

The death of the Calgary toddler was ruled a homicide but there are still no charges.
