State funeral for Layton

The politically powerful will mix with ordinary Canadians at today’s state funeral for former NDP Leader Jack Layton.

Among those attending the event at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto will be Prime Minister Harper as well as former prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin.

Seventeen hundred invests guests will be joined by several hundred members of the public.

Among those who will speak at the funeral will be Layton’s children as well as Stephen Lewis, a former Ontario NDP leader and former Canadian ambassador to the U-N.

Meanwhile, Jack Layton has requested his remains be cremated, and his ashes interred at three locations.

One is a Hudson, Quebec cemetery where his maternal grandparents and father are buried.

Second is the Toronto Islands, where Layton and Olivia Chow were married in 1988.

The third portion of his ashes will be buried at St. James Cemetery in downtown Toronto.
