Hurricane Irene downgraded to tropical storm

The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Irene has lost hurricane strength and made landfall on New York City.

Forecasters say Irene’s winds have dropped to 104 kph as it reached Brooklyn’s Coney Island section Sunday morning.

They say Irene should move over New England by the afternoon. Officials also warn that isolated tornadoes are possible in the northeast throughout the morning.

In Canada, tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the Bay of Fundy coastlines of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as Irene slowly moves up the eastern seaboard of the United States.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax says Irene is expected to be downgraded to a post-tropical storm by the time it moves through Maine and into Canada early Monday.

Wind warnings are in effect for mainland Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, all of New Brunswick except the province’s northwestern corner and for parts of Quebec’s St. Lawrence River valley.
