Shelters overflowing with cats and dogs

The City of Calgary’s Animal Services shelter is running near capacity with dozens of dogs and cats who need homes sitting for months on end, waiting.

Director Bill Bruce tells 660News, some of the animals have been there for as long as five months.

“You know, shelters are really just an interim management tool to take animals from unsafe situations to safety but they’re not a home.   They don’t do well in a shelter over a long period of time, they start to deteriorate, it’s boring.  As much as we do to try to create stimulating environments, they’re still not in a home and it’s not the best of worlds.  As good as you try to make it, it doesn’t replace the home,” says Bruce.

Calgarians looking for a pet, or who have lost one, can go to calgary.ca and search impounded and adoptable cats and dogs.

Bruce also suggests that people visit the shelter located at 2201 Portland Street S.E. Monday to Friday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. or Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

He also reminds Calgarians to 3-1-1 to file a report about a lost pet which assists Animal & Bylaw Services in helping to reunite them.

Many of the adoptable cats and dogs can be viewed at calgary.ca.    The pets are all vet checked, spayed or neutered, microchipped and come with a free six- month licence.

The Calgary Humane Society is overflowing with more than 500 felines.

Most of them are not kittens anymore and are more difficult to adopt out.

A special adoption for donation event wraps up Sunday for cats seven months of age and older.

The adoption event goes at the Humane Society from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The organization says it is also almost at capacity with dogs available for adoption.
