Schools in Edmonton getting healthier

Edmonton public schools will be junk food-free when students return on Thursday.

Public schools can no longer sell or give out food in the “choose least often” category of the Alberta nutrition guidelines.

The banned foods are those high in calories, fat, sugar and salt, like chips and crackers, cookies, sugary cereal, chocolate bars, candy, ice cream, pop and fruit-flavoured drinks.

According to The Calgary Herald, students can still bring junk food from home.
