Man killed in Northeast C-Train collision

One man has been killed after being struck by a train during the morning rush hour.
EMS were called to the corner of 39th Avenue and 36th Street, in the city’s northeast and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
The major intersection was kept closed for three hours as investigators with the Calgary Police Traffic Unit, reconstructed the scene.
Acting Inspector Michael Watterston says at this point they believe the victim was crossing the 36th Street heading west, when he was struck by a northbound train.
Watterston says it appears the whole situation was an accident.
“Obviously we collect as much information as we can from witnesses and just ask if anyone was injured at all,” says Watterston.
“There were witnesses both on the street corners, pedestrians and in their private vehicles,” says EMS Spokesman Stuart Brideaux.
The victim has been identified as a man in his early thirties.
Watterston says it’s unclear at this point as to whether traffic signals were working at the time.
The shaken up C-Train driver is being tended to by officials with Calgary Transit.
“They’ve got their protocols that they run through to make sure that the member’s well being is looked after as well,” he says. “It’s a traumatic situation.”
