Wednesday saw a celebration of olympic proportions at the Olympic Oval as athletes and officials came together to kick off the start of a new season, with many more in store.
Thanks to a new funding agreement established last year, the Oval remains one of the premiere speedskating facilities in the world. It’s now expected to stay that way for at least the next two decades, especially after the Oval’s leaky roof has finally been fixed.
Gold medalist Catriona Le May Doan says a leaky roof that’s finally been fixed is reason to celebrate.
“So, after 24 years, to finally say ‘our roof is fine,’ it’s a huge celebration and a relief for everybody. Not just the athletes but everybody that’s a part of this facitliy,” says LeMay-Doan.
She’s inviting more Calgarians to come out to the Oval, be it for public skates or cheering on our national team. A public open house is scheduled for October 15th.
