Northeast Calgary school has unique problem

Parents with children taking english at Mayland Heights Elementary School have a unique problem. They’re trying to save the school’s english program.
According to the Calgary Herald, the school has 56 students enrolled in the program, although official numbers won’t be available until the end of September.
Last year the school had 446 students, but most of them were taking the school’s french immersion studies.
That prompted Calgary Board of Education trustees to vote to shutdown the english program last April, a move to buy time for parents hoping to keep the program intact.
The chair of the school’s parents’ council, Pam Halla, says the CBE is obviously still considering shutting down the english program, adding she wouldn’t be surprised to hear something by November.
She hopes the parents’ council will get more time to recruit students, but notes the problem could be solved with one good kindergarten class committed to the english program.
