Athletes hit the books

Olympians past and future are cracking the books at Calgary’s National Sports School and they’re doing it at a brand new facility out at Canada Olympic Park.
The students arrived for their first day of classes Tuesday morning.
About 150 provincially and nationally-ranked athletes rolled up in the same yellow buses all kids take but what’s different, is these kids are enrolled in classes that are flexible and tailored to their rigorous training schedules.
Alumnus and gold medal gymnast Kyle Shewfelt was on hand to welcome the future stars of Canadian sport.
“As a student athlete, you have training, you have school. Those are the only things on your plate and this school allows you to really ease it out and have a little more balance,” says Shewfelt.
It also gives students easy access to some of the finest training facilities in the world.
36 NSS students represented Canada at last year’s Olympics in Vancouver.
