Cutting the red tape

Red tape is a big problem and it’s costing the Canadian economy billions of dollars.
“The CFIB has estimated that the cost of red tape is over $30 billion a year for Canadian businesses,” Laura Jones of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business tells 660News. “So it’s an important issue to get a handle on, particularly as we look at continuing to try and support the economy through some pretty turbulent times right now.”
Jones says following the recent striking of the Red Tape Reduction Commission, there is a sense that eventually the bureaucracy that complicates business transactions and drives up costs will be addressed.
She adds the commission has identified various problems during cross-Canada hearings and work to address them is about to begin.
“They heard 2300 different examples in a very short period of time,” says Jones. “So the first report was reflecting on what was heard. Now the commission is turning its attention to how do we make long term change? How do we control red tape for the long haul? It” (the process) “promises to be different for a number of reasons. First of all the Prime Minister himself is behind it and you need that kind of political leadership to get something done on this kind of tricky file.”
