Residents of the southeast community of Ramsay are suing the Lilydale chicken-processing plant over claims the operation prevents them from being able to enjoy their properties.
Ecojustice lawyer Barry Robinson says residents are suing because they’ve lived for years with disruptive noise and foul odours, and in some cases, chicken parts on their properties.
He also points out that a 2009 ammonia leak from the plant forced residents from their homes.
Robinson says his clients are asking that Lilydale stop night time trucking from the plant, limit odour pollution, and secure chicken waste bins so the parts don’t end up all over the neighbourhood.
Ramsay residents are also looking for $250,000 in damages, as well as other undisclosed damages for the 2009 ammonia leak.
A Lilydale spokesperson says the company believes they’ve broken no laws and will defend against the claims.
