Convicted predators out and about

Hundreds of convicted sex offenders live in our midst, with many guilty of targeting children.
This comes to light after Sparwood residents were outraged to learn a sex offender, now accused of kidnapping a three-year-old boy, was released into the community without any notice.
That’s because only those considered likely to re-offend for sex assaults, crimes against children and other violent attacks are subject to notifications.
But the high risk offender program’s Sgt. Rich Veldhoen tells The Calgary Sun, despite issuing less than a half dozen notifications a year, the government monitors 40 to 50 offenders at any given time.
