Flames training camp underway

It’s the unofficial start of hockey season; Flames training camp kicked off Friday morning.

The team is looking to improve on consecutive 10th place finishes, and fans are crossing their fingers there will be playoff hockey in Calgary this season.

Players are facing a battery of activities that measure how well they stayed in shape over the summer.

Sportsnet Radio The Fan960’s Dean Molberg says the process should just be a formality for NHL players.

“This is not the ’70s where training camp was to get in shape after the summer,” says Molberg.  “If you come to camp out of shape, you may get sent home.”

Molberg says it will likely be an uneventful camp for the team, as there is very little room for young players to crack the veteran-laden roster.

Hockey Night in Canada panelist, Calgary Sun columnist and JACK FM Morning Show co-host Eric Francis agrees.

“The team is going out of its way to let the youngsters know that, ‘hey, if you really knock our socks off you have a shot of making this team,’ but I’m not buying it,” says Francis.

Fans can get a look at the 38 players in camp starting Saturday, when the team starts on-ice sessions, which are open to the public.
