It’s an event that serves as a beacon of hope to those that have had their lives affected by cancer.
The Terry Fox Run will take place this Sunday, with runs across the country including two in Calgary.
National Director and Chief Financial Officer Brett Kohli says excitement is really starting to build.
He calls September their month, with the hundreds of runs scheduled and 8,500 school events next week.
Funds raised go to supporting cancer research across the country.
“We look for the best science that we can, with the help of organizations that specialize in that area, in terms of researching special projects and grants,” says Kohli.
The CFO says there may be an internal fundraising goal but they try not to divulge that to the public.
That’s because Kohli says any money that’s raised for research during the run, makes the run a successful one.
“Ideally we try to raise more funds each and every year, it doesn’t always happen that way,” he says.
In 2010 the foundation raised 28 Million, bringing it’s 31 year total to over 550 Million dollars.
Kohli adds they’re working hard on expanding the social media area, in terms of Facebook and Twitter.
They also now have an App on smart phones to make donations easier for the public.
Events get underway in Calgary this Sunday morning, with one run at the Mackenzie Towne Towne Hall from 9 until noon.
The second is at Eau Claire Market’s north courtyard, beginning at 9:30am.
