Block Parents program could soon be history in Calgary

It appears the days of the Block Parent program in Calgary are numbered.
Block Parents, which has been running in this city since 1975, is on the verge of folding thanks to a lack of volunteers.
Linda Patterson is the President of Block Parents Canada and wonders in today’s Calgary Herald: “Where will the children go if they need help? They know that a red and white sign in the window means the house is a safe place to go and now those signs will be gone.”
But Patterson intimates it might be more than a lack of volunteers that’s causing the demise of the program in Calgary, adding that the national organization tried to get the Calgary Board to change its mind about shutting down the program.
Patterson believes the program could be saved with the influx of about 30 new volunteers.
Five years ago, a rift between the Edmonton chapter and the national office saw the capital city withdraw from the program and form the Edmonton Safe Parents program.
