Mar clear front-runner after first ballot for PC leadership

Gary Mar is in the lead for the Alberta PC Leadership Race with a wide margin after the first ballot.

The former member of the Ralph Klein government did better than his five opponents, securing 24,195 votes but was unable to get the 50% majority needed to avoid a second vote.

Alison Redford came in second place with 11,129 votes while Doug Horner rounded out the top three candidates with 8,635.

Ted Morton (6962), Rick Orman (6005) and Doug Griffiths (2435) failed to advance to the second vote.

59,361 votes were cast in Saturday’s first ballot, far less than the 97,690 in round one of the 2006 race featuring Ed Stelmach.

Mar, Redford and Horner will move onto the second ballot vote on Oct. 1st.
