Alberta’s former envoy to Washington is looking more and more like the province’s next Premier.
Gary Mar welcomes the endorsements of two of his formal rivals, but says his campaign to succeed retiring Premier Ed Stelmach is far from over.
Monday, Rick Orman and Ted Morton threw their support behind Mar, after they were eliminated in first ballot results on Saturday.
Alison Redford, who finished a distant second to Mar on the first ballot, says she will continue to campaign hard and urge party members to take a look at what she would bring to the premier’s chair.
Doug Horner, who has an even bigger hill to climb, scoffed at suggestions he throw in the towel.
Horner says a lot of his supporters in rural Alberta didn’t vote on the weekend, but is confident they will be there come October 1st.
In the next vote, P.C. members will rank the candidates, so if a clear winner does not emerge, it would open the door for somebody else, as was the case back in 2006 when Stelmach won the job.
Mount Royal political scientist David Taras tells The Calgary Herald unless an “anybody but Gary” coalition emerges in the next 12 days, the former Health Minister will be hard to stop.
