Largest food drive in Calgary now underway!

The end of September signals the highest demand for food hampers.

Over seven-thousand volunteers are dropping off collection bags at 350,000 homes in hopes that people will fill them up with donations to the food bank.

The food banks Catherine Sims says so many people giving their time shows Calgary is like one big neighbourhood with neighbours helping neighbours.

“For seven-thousand volunteers to assemble on the streets for a two hour period on a Saturday morning and pull together such a significant amount of food, that alone is striking.”

Organizer Larry Stackman says “This is the single biggest bunch of food that goes to the food bank every year.”

This event set a  world record in 2008 gathering more than a half million pounds of donation and they’re hoping they can do it again this year at a time when the need for food hampers is peaking.
