New chronic illness workshops

Alberta Health Services has launched a new program aimed at helping people with a chronic illness help themselves.

It’s through a series of self-management workshops.

The program is called ‘Better Choices, Better Health.’

Dr. Peter Sargis says studies show that people who take ownership of their issues fare far better than those who rely strictly on doctor visits as a means of managing chronic issues.

“The main thing we’ve noticed is that individuals have a tremendous amount to bring to the management of their own condition.  If we give them the tools and the confidence to do that, they can make a much bigger difference to their health than their doctors and the rest of their health care team can,” says Sargis.

Better Choices, Better Health is a series of free workshops now available in communities across the province, offering resources and support for self-management.

More information is available through Alberta Health Link.
