Two Calgary Police officers cleared of using excessive force

Criminal charges will not be laid against two police officers, stemming from a shooting incident almost 2 years ago.

Back on November 11th, 2009 man driving an SUV tried to flee a traffic stop at Prairie Winds Park in the northeast, when officers opened fire.  The man suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Executive Director of the unit that probes the actions of police, especially when it comes to discharging a weapon says he’s sorry it took so long to complete the investigation.

Clifton Purvis says normally the Alberta Serious Incident Response teams only needs 6 months to wrap up such a probe.

Purvis also tells 660News, that he’s not surprised the officers were not charged.

He says less than 10 per cent of the cases ASIRT investigates result in charges being filed against the accused officers.

Purvis says for the most police do a good job and only use excessive force when lives are in danger.

Across the province, ASIRT has 35 active investigations on the go.
