Whether it’s depression, a mood disorder or anxiety, it’s estimated that at least one-in-five Canadians suffer from some sort of mental illness.
Local agencies are launching an awareness week on the challenges and solutions to the problem, Monday night, at the Kahanoff Conference Centre downtown, at Suite 200, 1202 Centre St S.E.
Angela Anderson, with the Canadian Mental Health Association, tells 660News the stigma of mental illness is the biggest barrier for those who need help.
“The biggest thing people can do is just to talk about mental illness, learn about some of the resources that are available in Calgary and that in itself will help reduce some of that stigma,” says Anderson.
The speaker series for Mental Illness Awareness Week starts Monday night at 5 p.m. with Dr. Ted Jablonski, a Calgary physician, musician and public speaker.
Another event, on Tuesday, October 4th at Banker’s Hall Auditorium, will feature keynote speaker John Hemingway, the American author whose memoir, Strange Tribe, examines the complex relationship between his father, Dr. Gregory Hemingway, and his grandfather, Nobel Laureate Ernest Hemingway.
