A scary afternoon in the community of Signal Hill.
Police say a man fired shots at officers when they arrived at a home near Sirroco Drive and 17th Avenue.
Virginia Peterson’s car was hit, luckily she was not injured.
“I heard a clank, I didn’t really know what it was, I just knew I had to get out of there.” Adding, “I made the wrong decision to come and get a coffee, otherwise I would have been at home.”
A large area is cordoned off around Sirroco Drive and 17th Avenue and Duty Inspector Darren Cave says they continue to investigate.
He explains what took place, “This afternoon we had an active shooter situation in SW Calgary. Our members responded to the area of Sirroco Drive and the situation was dealt with and right now we’re just at that point in our investigation where ASIRT is investigating.”
After shooting at officers the man then turned the gun on himself.
He was treated by EMS for a gunshot wound and later died in hospital.
None of the officers involved were hurt nor did they fire a shot at the suspect.
“What I can tell you is that our members did not challenge anyone. The situation ended before that was able to happen” says Cave.
