The Calgary Fire Department is teaming up with Meals on Wheels for a new program to try to protect at risk seniors and the disabled.
As part of Fire Protection Week, Calgary Fire safety officers are traveling with Meals on Wheels volunteers to teach them how to assess smoke detectors, the first line of defense in case of a fire.
Every year, firefighters inspect the smoke detectors of 21,000 homes in Calgary to assess or replace them.
Deputy Chief Len MacCharles with Calgary Fire says this partnership couldn’t have come at a better time.
“This is a natural progression. We’re thinking that this is an opportunity to reach a group that we might not otherwise reach,” says MacCharles.
Starting today, meals delivered will also include a detector inspection by a safety officer who will educate the Meals on Wheels volunteers and teach them how to test, change batteries or replace existing detectors during future visits.
