A fire-safe home, working smoke alarms on all levels and an escape plan are the three key essentials when dealing with a home fire escape.
As part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Calgary Fire Dept. is stressing the importance of having and practicing an escape plan.
Brian McAsey with Calgary Fire tells 660News, families should also have a meeting place and know what to do until firefighters arrive.
“We love to see people out in the driveway pointing out the burning building,” he said. “And that’s the most important thing: that people get out, like safety with everything else”.
He adds flames can quickly spread through a home leaving as little as two minutes to get out quickly, once the smoke alarm sounds.
They also recommend practicing your escape plan twice a year, making the drill as realistic as possible.
