Student group sounds alarm over student debt

The Canadian Federation of Students is sounding the alarm about tuition fees and loans.
It says student debt in our country is close to hitting its legal ceiling of $15 billion and if nothing is done before January 2013, then the federal government won’t be able to loan anymore money to those heading to college or university.
“By adopting a national frame work, such as a post secondary education act, the government could enforce a dedicated cash transfer to the provinces for post secondary education as it does for health care,” says CFS chair Roxanne Dubois, who is calling on the government to take action. “This transfer could be directly aimed at reducing tuition fees.”
The government has hit the student loan ceiling once before, but gave a loan forgiveness worth $1.9 billion to deal with the issue.
The average debt for a student fresh out of university or college is about $25,000.
