Transit ridership exceeds expectations

New data shows 50 per cent of those who work in downtown Calgary are using transit to get to and from the office.
According to The Calgary Herald, that’s up from 33 per cent back in 1996 and 13 years sooner than what was targeted under the Go-Plan, the city’s transportation blueprint which was drawn up back in the mid 90’s.
The director of transportation planning, Don Mulligan, says the increased use of transit is helping ease some of the traffic congestion in the core.
Among the reasons cited for riding the rails or hoping on a bus are convenience and the high price of parking.
Ward 11 Alderman Brian Pincott tells 660News, Calgarians love their transit and he expects usage numbers will rise even more when the west leg of the LRT comes on line in late 2012.
Pincott says now that the spine of a world class transit service is in place, they can work on improving transit service among neighbourhoods.
