Health experts are warning bacon, hot dogs, deli meats and other processed meats billed as “natural” may not be much healthier than their traditional counterparts.
Ads for the products claim they’re made with real ingredients and no added preservatives.
But a look beyond the label reveals they contain a cultured celery extract which is a source of nitrates and nitrites — the preserving agents linked to heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
A Toronto dietician tells The Globe and Mail the term “natural” is misleading.
