Job seekers might have to settle for part-time positions

The Conference Board of Canada says Canada will be weighed down by economic problems outside it’s borders but will likely avoid a recession next year.

However, the Ottawa based think-tank says the slowdown will stifle both economic growth and job creation.

The Senior Economist at ATB Financial says those looking for a pay cheque will likely have to take on part-time work.

Todd Hirsch says many Canadian retailers are hiring people ahead of the upcoming busy holiday shopping season.

Sears is the latest Canadian retailer to announce it’s posting help wanted signs similar to announcements earlier this fall from electronic retailers Best Buy and Future Shop.

Hirsch describes Alberta’s labour market as balanced, favouring neither employers or employees.

He thinks teenagers , mature workers and those who are tired of looking for a full-time job will be the ones filling the various Christmas related job postings.
